Expert on the history
and properties of Japanese tea, the processing of tea leaves, and the preparation methods of good tea.
Ten students from Jurong Secondary School attended a Japanese tea ceremony workshop as part of CCA activities. Since entering a Japanese tea room was new experience for most students, they enjoyed looking on the seasonal floral arrangement, the hanging scroll, and many more Japanese style interior decorations.
While one of Urasenke member was demonstrating the tea ceremony, another member was explaining about the procedure. Dry sweets were served to the students just before a bowl of tea was served to the first guest. In tea ceremony, sweets are supposed to be consumed before drinking tea, but for them it did not seem to be usual way. Some students described the taste of tea as ‘like seaweed’, which was quite interesting.
After the demonstration, each participant tried making tea for his or her peer.
We are very happy that we able to contribute to Singapore school education.
